How this is counted

  • Smart money = every trader on the Compass leaderboard with at least $10,000 of verified lifetime profit — 9,777 wallets today out of 79,630 tracked, $3.79B of combined lifetime profit — transit wallets and airdrop farmers excluded.
  • Positions come from real on-chain wallets, reconciled every 5 minutes — not from an exchange-published aggregate you cannot check.
  • The capital ratio weighs open perp notional (positions ≥ $1,000); the by-traders ratio counts each wallet once by its net exposure.
  • History is snapshotted hourly, around the clock — the chart never depends on someone reloading the page.
Source: Compass — Smart Money Long/Short (compass.trade/long-short). 33% of profitable Hyperliquid traders' open capital is positioned short ($289.8M long vs $601.7M short across 367 wallets). On-chain wallet data, 2026-08-28 19:19 UTC.

How to read this

This is not the usual long/short ratio. The ratio published by exchanges and aggregators counts everyone — including the majority of traders who lose money. This page counts only wallets from the Compass leaderboard with at least $10,000 of verified lifetime profit — every proven winner we track, not a cherry-picked top list. When this group leans one way and the crowd leans the other, that divergence is the signal.

Two ratios, one story. "By capital" weighs positions by dollar size — three large wallets can dominate it. "By traders" counts each wallet once. When both agree, conviction is broad; when they split, a few big positions are driving the number.

Why you can trust it. Hyperliquid settles every trade on-chain, so positions are reconstructed from real wallet state — not self-reported by a venue. Click any trader in the table above and check their track record yourself. The trade-off: this covers Hyperliquid only.

FAQ

Are the top Hyperliquid traders long or short right now?

As of 2026-08-28 19:19 UTC, 32.5% of open notional held by profitable Hyperliquid traders is long ($289.8M long vs $601.7M short across 367 wallets with open positions, drawn from 9,777 traders with $10K+ verified profit).

Who counts as "smart money" here?

Every wallet on the Compass leaderboard with at least $10,000 of verified lifetime profit — thousands of proven winners, not a hand-picked shortlist. A wallet that is barely above break-even does not qualify. Transit wallets and airdrop farmers — addresses whose "profit" comes from transfers rather than trading — are excluded. The exact set updates continuously as the leaderboard moves.

Is this real data or an estimate?

Real. Every Hyperliquid trade settles on-chain; positions here come from the actual wallet state of identifiable addresses, reconciled every few minutes. Ratios published by centralised exchanges are internal aggregates you cannot verify.

How often does it update?

Live positions are reconciled roughly every 5 minutes around the clock, and the page refreshes itself automatically. The history chart is built from hourly snapshots, so it keeps moving even when nobody is watching.

Does following smart money work?

Positioning is context, not advice. Profitable traders are wrong regularly — what makes them profitable is sizing and risk management, which a ratio cannot show. Use it to understand where experienced money is leaning, not as a trade signal.

Can I cite these numbers?

Yes. Please cite Compass and link to this page — a ready-made citation line is in the "How this is counted" block above.
